    Is the environment suffering?

    Friday, April 4, 2008

The environment is in fact suffering over the past years throughout the world in different forms. For example, the rainforests in Amazon are being deforested at rates at which it cannot recover fast enough. The size of the rainforests have fallen over the past 20 years due to the high deforestation rates. The reasons for the deforestation are listed in the piechart on the left.

The main causes are agriculturing for food, which is in high demand due to the world's growing population. Even though there are some actions taken to save the rainforests, such as the Forest Stewardship Council, the damage had already been done. It would be years before the rainforests would recover to their former state in the past, and even more so with some illegal logging activities still going on and the growing demand for agricultural food. The ecosystem of the Amazon rainforests have thus been affected greatly. Another example is the recent global warming trend. It is the result of the increase in the release of greenhouse gases through the burning of fossil fuels into the atmosphere.Global warming have caused a change in the climate as well as the environment. The change in the climate have resulted in various problems, such as the melting of the poles, which has caused higher rates of floodings throughout the world.

The increase in global temperatures is shown by the graph on the left. As shown by the examples, Man have been the main cause of these examples of environmental degradations through various actions of making our own lives more comfortable and to ensure our survival at the risk of the environment. Even though we have realised the folly of our past actions, the damage had already been done, and it would take a long time before we can repair the damage we have done, and more importantly, to make more people understand that the environment is actually more fragile than we think it is, and they have a huge part to play in helping the preservation of our environment. With each individual doing their part, it is possible to preserve it in the long run.
